Published in 1866, this first edition of Life and Campaigns of Lieut.-Gen. Thomas J. Jackson by R.L. Dabney is a major Confederate biography written during the Reconstruction period. Dabney, who had served as Jackson's chief of staff, composed this biography with the help of Jackson's family and was granted access to their private papers and wartime correspondence. The volume offers not only personal observations but also a sympathetic portrayal of the Southern cause, reflecting the postwar memorialization of Confederate heroes. The work contains critical first-person accounts and is dedicated to the "widows and orphans of Southern soldiers," echoing the Lost Cause ideology of the postwar period. The text is accompanied by eleven diagrams of Civil War battles such as Manassas, Chickahominy, and Chancellorsville. Octavo (8vo), single volume.
