A book that tells the story of Ishi, the last Yahi man, who was discovered in 1911 after he left his remote home in search of food and was brought to UC Berkeley, where he was befriended and studied by the famous anthropologist Alfred (A.L.) Kroeber, Theodora's husband. His name was never learned, but A.L. Kroeber gave him the name Ishi, the word for "man" in Yahi. Ishi became a sensation, but died five years later of tuberculosis. Ishi in Two Worlds has been described as a "modern classic" and has sold well over 1 million copies, though modern assessments sometimes criticize the account for not drawing enough attention to the way Ishi was displayed and assimilated. A.L. Kroeber studied with Franz Boas before making his name at UC Berkeley where he became known as the "Dean of American Anthropologists." Theodora met him as doctoral student and became renown for this book as well as The Inland Whale. Ursula LeGuin is their daughter. With a foreword by Lewis Gannett and an insert of black and white photos. Near fine in beige cloth with a previous owner's inscription on the patterned front free endpaper and a bookplate on the pastedown. In a very good jacket with a little waviness to the left side of the front panel and a couple short tears to lower edge.
