"New edition", i.e. second edition after the first English edition of 1745. 8vo. pp. cxviii, 225, bound without half-title; folding engraved map, wood-engraved illustrations throughout; previous owner's bookplates, contemporary half calf, gilt spine in 5 compartments, lettering piece, a little rubbed, else very good. Egede took part in the Danish colonization of Greenland and undertook Christian mission work among the Eskimo, living with his family in West Greenland between the years 1721 to 1736. His Description of Greenland, the enlarged Danish edition of which appeared in 1741, is perhaps most important for its discussion of the Eskimo themselves: Egede details their manners and customs, clothing, food, family relationships, mortuary customs, language, beliefs, and so on.
