Egede took part in the Danish colonization of Greenland and undertook Christian mission work among the Eskimo, living with his family in West Greenland between the years 1721 to 1736. His Description of Greenland, the enlarged Danish edition of which appeared in 1741, is perhaps most important for its discussion of the Eskimo themselves: Egede details their manners and customs, clothing, food, family relationships, mortuary customs, language, beliefs, and so on.
